The Hunger Games: Book Two

Catching Fire
The second book in the Hunger Games series certainly did not disappoint.
My heart dropped when I read that Katniss and Peeta would be reaped into the Hunger Games for a second time for the Quarter Quell. I was so MAD at President Snow. I didn’t know if my nerves could handle another round of the Games. I knew the Capitol would not let Katniss survive these games because she had become too dangerous as the symbol of rebellion.  Katniss and Peeta’s first Hunger Games were stressful enough, but this time there was an added layer of intensity since you could tell Katniss was being used by the people she trusted (Haymitch and Cinna) to serve their purposes, but you didn’t quite know what their purposes were yet.  I could predict that something would happen to end the Quarter Quell, but I wasn’t sure how. I thought it was interesting how Katniss was being used as a symbol for rebellion when she didn’t even know she wanted rebellion. Suzanne Collins chose a very good title, Catching Fire, because certainly the fire of rebellion was building throughout this book.

My questions for you:  What are some of the instances that show that the rebellion was catching fire? Think about both the first and the second books. Where do you start seeing the rebels setting Katniss up as the symbol? How long do you think the rebels planned this? Do you think their rebellion would have worked if Prim had gone into the games instead of Katniss?

  3. I think Katniss is a symbol of fire because she always has a fighting look on her face just like fire wants to burn. I think the rebellions had been planning this for as long as she was in the games. If Prim was chosen I dont think she would have survived against all the older ones!!! Some of the instances where when snow wanted revenge on Katniss by putting her back in the games because he wanted her to die and not to win again to see the sorrow of her family and another one is when prim was chosen and Katniss wanted to risk her life to save her sister. I miss you so much Ms. Z and I hope you come back next year (or sooner hopefully!) and do book club again! I hope to start book club with Mrs. Vaughn!!!! Miss you!

  4. Well said, Margaret! I, too, think the rebels had been planning for a long time. I think that is why Cinna requested District 12 and had the fire theme planned at the beginning. Lucky for him, Katniss and Peeta were good in the games and got a lot of attention on their own as well as the attention from their outfits that Cinna designed.

I miss you too! I hope I will be able to visit soon! It might not be until March or April, though. I am so glad to hear you are interested in book club again! You will have to let me know what book you choose to read :)
